GALLERY : Portuguese Windmill

 << back

Portugal is quite probably the world record holder for the number of traditional windmills. The windmill studied is characteristic of Loures, in the Lisbon region, where 16 windmills are referenced and a few still exist. See the gmaps link for an example.

The video ilustrates a 2004 CFD RANS simulation of a Portuguese windmill, done with Adapco's Star-CD. Turbulence was modelled with k-omega /SST. A 2 million cells mesh was used, employing a moving grid and MRF (multiple rotating reference frames) techniques to simulate the sails rotation.

The first video shows the pressure countours over the windmills surface. The second video displays, in more detail, the mesh in the surface of the rotating/non-rotating interfaces.
